What Navarātri is

Navarātri, the "nine nights", honours the Devī in her many forms. In much of South India the nights are commonly grouped in three: the first three to Durgā, the next three to Lakṣmī, and the last three to Sarasvatī. On Navamī, books, instruments and the tools of one's work are placed before the Devī. On Vijayadaśamī, many Kerala and Karnataka families begin a child's learning (Vidyārambham, Akṣarābhyāsa).

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्तिरूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥
“To that Devī who dwells in all beings as power: salutations to her, again and again.”
— Devī Māhātmya (Durgā Saptaśatī) 5
